Iconic Alta Via route from Largo di Braies to Belluno

Exceptional Geological Beauty

Located in north eastern Italy, the Dolomite mountain range is of truly exceptional geological beauty. The region offers something a little different from the Alps - a truly dramatic landscape, from the towering limestone peaks, sculptured spires, lunar like plateaux, to deciduous and ever green forests, and lush alpine meadows.

The Dolomites were recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009. They are a must do for any outdoor enthusiast and seasoned hiker. And of course, this self-contained mountainous area sits perfectly within the most beautiful of countries… Italy!

There are many walking routes to choose from in the Dolomites, named Alta Via (high route) or AV for short. We have focused on the Alta Via 1, which makes for a great all-round experience if you have never hiked in the region before.

The Alta Via 1 travels approximately 125 kilometres (77 miles) from Largo di Braies to La Pissa. The route passes over 18 high mountain passes with an accumulative height gain and descent of approximately 6,500m (21,300 ft).

For more information take a look at our photo and video gallery page to get a visual look at the route and read some of our Alta Via blog posts.
