The Italian Dolomites - Fitness Preparation

So you have signed up for a summer adventure trekking on the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites. Now is the time you make sure you are fit and ready in order to get maximum enjoyment out of your trek. The Alta Via 1 is a great challenge and preparation is the key to achieving your goal.

The Dolomites are for sure a stunningly beautiful area to hike but it isn’t easy and each day you will experience some challenging terrain. The Alta Via 1 is physically demanding, you will be travelling over rugged and mountainous terrain with a sustained amount of ascent and descent on a daily basis with out a break. When hiking in the Dolomites it is more about the height gain, descent and terrain each day rather than the distance travelled. Take a look at daily statistics and the overall accumulation so you know what to expect.

TREK GRADING: Grade 3 DIFFICULT
We grade our treks from 1 to 4 (1 being relatively easy and 4 being toughest), each trek receives a grade depending on the difficulty of terrain and numbers of days of sustained trekking.

Alta Via 1 is a grade 3 trek. It is a difficult multi day challenge requiring a high level of fitness. It requires a good pace when hiking, carrying a day sac most days plus more on the days when there is no bag transfer. Repeated seven-hour mountain days on mixed terrain with short breaks. On the AV1 there is limited options for rest days as you stay mainly in refuges which makes the trek seem harder.
