The Dolomites
Located in North Eastern Italy the Dolomite mountain range is of truly exceptional geological beauty. The region offers something a little different from the Alps, this is a truly dramatic landscape, from the towering limestone peaks, sculptured spires, lunar like plateaux to deciduous and evergreen forests and lush alpine meadows. Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009 this is a must-do for any outdoor enthusiast and seasoned hiker.
Accommodation - Dolomites Alta Via 1.
There are so many wonderful options for accommodation in the Dolomites. From 5 star luxury hotels to the gorgeous little mountain huts which serve hearty local food, high up in the mountains.
We have listened to feedback from our self-guided clients and have chosen the best of the 3star hotels that work with the Alta Via 1 route and mountain huts when they are in great locations and have both quality accommodation and food.
Rooms in the hotels are on a twin/ double basis unless requested otherwise, however for solo travellers we can book single rooms with a supplement. The Rifugios (mountain huts) usually offer cosy dormitory style accommodation with shared facilities. However, in some of the rifugios we can book you private rooms although supplements will apply.
Accommodation can be tailor-made for you as part of your self-guided trip with us, all you have to do is let us know what you are looking for and we will come up with the best accommodation to suit your needs. As an example, families with children hiking the Dolomites are usually looking for very different accommodation that affords privacy and allows the children to play and eat well. Whilst solo trekkers are usually keen to have a mix between time in the dormitories sharing their experiences with other like-minded hikers and comfortable accommodation on rest days that allow rest and relaxation to re-charge batteries for the following days walk.
Hiking the Dolomites - Food:
Hikers eat very well in Italy! “The Dolomites have all the greatness of Italy, but transported to the mountains,” says Massimo Bottura (the chef of the world’s top-rated restaurant, Osteria Francescana.)
Generally, hotels have more variety in their menus, but you can expect a home cooked, satisfying meal in the mountain huts.
The rifugios vary in size and amenities and their food options vary accordingly. They typically offer a decent mix of mainstream to local dishes that are prepared in traditional Ladin style. Some huts offer self-service, while others provide table service. The food choices at most of the huts include everything from fish and meats to pasta and snacks. Ladin dishes, like canederli (dumplings made of bread and speck) and Kaiserschmarren (pancakes served with cranberries) offer a chance to experience the ancient culture of the area.
Bed, breakfast and 3 course evening meals will be included in your trek with us, with the exception of Cortina & Belluno, which will be breakfast only.
